Apple working on low-cost MacBook powered by iPhone Chip, reports suggest

New Delhi: In some reports, it has been suggested that Apple is now planning and working on unveiling its latest entry-level MacBook model, which is expected to run on an A-series Apple Silicon processor, a chipset which are used in iPhones. According to some reports, the company’s upcoming budget Mac is aimed at the users of Chromebooks and entry-level Windows laptops. Apple has also stated that they are going to aim at iPad buyers who prefer a more traditional laptop form factor over a tablet experience.

This upcoming MacBook will carry the codename J700, and it is currently undergoing active testing at Apple, with the early production reportedly underway with the suppliers. This device is stated to be especially designed for students, small businesses, and casual users whose primary needs include web browsing, document work, and light media editing. Now, if we discuss in terms of hardware, Apple’s latest budget MacBook will use an A-series chip, marking the first time an iPhone-grade processor will be used in a Mac instead of a chip specifically designed for computers.

This laptop might feature a lower-end LCD display, the smallest among Apple’s current Mac lineup, measuring slightly below the 13.6-inch panel found on the MacBook Air.  Despite not using the Mac-specific processor, internal testing reports show that the A-series chip chosen for the device outperforms Apple’s M1 chip, which debuted in 2020 and powered the first generation of Apple Silicon Macs. However, while it is unclear which A-series chip Apple plans to use, some reports suggested that it could be the A18 Pro processor, the same chipset that is found on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

In some reports, it is also suggested that Apple’s latest entry-level MacBook is going to be equipped with an iPhone-grade A-series chip, which is likely to start around $600, which is approximately Rs 55,000, and positioning it against premium Chromebooks and iPads paired with Magic Keyboard accessories. MacBook is currently in active testing and early production with the planned launch in the first half of 2026. This timeline suggests that the latest device could debut alongside the iPhone 17 Pro or the m5 MacBook Air, both of which are also expected around the same period.
