Apple gears up for 24MP selfie revolution with upcoming iPhone 18 Series

New Delhi: Apple is now preparing for its upcoming flagship iPhone 18 series, and it is expected to receive a significant camera upgrade, with all of the premium models featuring the 24MP front-facing camera. According to some sources, this represents a notable jump from the 18MP selfie camera currently found in the iPhone 17 series. This upgrade would apply to the iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the second-generation iPhone Air, all slated for release in September 2026. Apple is rumoured to be the first to feature a foldable iPhone, which will reportedly feature an industry-first 24MP under-display camera integrated into its inner screen, making it a groundbreaking implementation of the technology.

Not all the models will receive this upgrade; the budget-oriented iPhone 17e and iPhone 18e are expected to continue using the 12MP front cameras, maintaining a clear distinction between Apple’s premium and entry-level offerings. The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e won’t arrive until spring 2027, as part of Apple’s latest split-cycle launch strategy. This 24MP camera was rumoured initially for the iPhone 17 lineup but never materialised, suggesting the feature was postponed rather than cancelled.

This higher resolution sensor would enable sharper selfies, improved portrait mode accuracy, and better low-light performance. Apple is testing HIAA technology to miniaturise the front camera on iPhone 18 Pro models, potentially resulting in smaller, Dynamic Island or repositioned camera placement. This advanced display manufacturing technique, which is going to be developed by Samsung, uses laser micro-drilling to create ultra-compact camera apertures within the active screen area. The upgraded selfie camera would complement other rumoured iPhone 18 features, including the variable aperture rear lenses and improved thermal management systems, positioning the lineup as a substantial generational upgrade over current models.
