Apple foldable iPhone could feature Touch ID, iPad-like app layouts: Report

New Delhi: According to sources, Apple is currently demonstrating the world for the first time the first foldable iPhone, which is expected to arrive in September 2026. While the company readies itself to launch in its emerging foldable phone market, it’s beginning the rollout of the device to early testers, according to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

The new iPhone, which is dubbed iPhone Ultra internally, is said to have a book based exterior design. It is said to be capable of opening to reveal a larger 7.8-inch native screen with a smaller outer screen of 5.5 inches. This bigger screen might also be a way to get the tablet experience on a smartphone.

One of the key changes is expected to be the software. Apple is reportedly testing app layouts on the larger internal screen that are similar to what you see on an iPad. This could make the utilisation of the additional display space more efficient and facilitate multitasking when the phone is opened.

Earlier testers have also mentioned that they enjoyed the portability of the device and how it feels like it has a hinge. It appears that Apple has its sights set on a really thin design, and the device is said to be approximately 4.5mm thick when it is opened.

In order to keep up the slim design, Apple could be changing an important aspect of the biometric security. The foldable iPhone will go without Face ID and implement Touch ID with the side button instead. This would be quite a turnaround from Apple’s recent high-end iPhone phones that are based on Face ID.

The camera system could be another area where Apple makes some compromises. The foldable iPhone is expected to have a dual camera system comprising of a 48MP primary camera with an ultra-wide camera, but likely without a dedicated telephoto lens.

The price will most likely be an issue that is discussed. The device is said to begin at around $2,000 and versions which feature larger storage will cost over $2,500. In September, Apple is anticipated to unveil the foldable iPhone along with the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The first foldable iPhone was then poised to be a revolutionary new change in Apple’s smartphone lineup that will offer the familiar iPhone user interface with a larger tablet-esque screen.
