Amazon to shut down Kindle Store support for legacy devices

New Delhi: Amazon has officially announced that it will shut down its Kindle Store functions on older Kindle devices starting May 20. Amazon has confirmed that this change will affect Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablets, which were launched in 2012 and earlier, with these devices no longer able to purchase, borrow, or download any of the latest books directly from the Kindle Store after the announced deadline.

And However, users will still be able to access and read the content that has already been downloaded to their devices. In some recent reports, it came to know that the users’ access to the purchased books will continue via the Kindle mobile application, Kindle for Web, and newer Kindle devices.

If these older devices are deregistered or factory reset after May 20, the users will not be able to re-register them.

Now, let’s see those older Kindle devices:

  • Kindle 1st generation (2007)
  • Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010)
  • Kindle Keyboard (2010)
  • Kindle 4 (2011)
  • Kindle Touch (2011)
  • Kindle 5 (2012)
  • Kindle Paperwhite 1st generation (2012)
  • Kindle Fire 1st generation (2011)
  • Kindle Fire 2nd generation (2012)
  • Kindle Fire HD 7 (2012)
  • Kindle Fire HD 8.9 (2012)

Amazon has also confirmed that it will notify affected users through email ahead of the deadline, and by explaining the limitations and what functionality will remain. While pre-2012 Kindle Fire devices will go on to face the same restrictions for the books and Kindle Store access, other applications and Amazon services on those devices are not expected to be affected.

Amazon is also gearing up to offer incentives for users looking to upgrade. These will include 20% discount on the latest Kindle devices and a $20 ebook credit, which will be added to users’ accounts after updating and will remain valid until June 20, 2026.
