Amazon introduces AI episode recaps, leaving some viewers waiting

New Delhi: Amazon is rolling out its latest AI-powered Video Recaps features on Prime Video, which uses machine learning to identify the critical key plot points and combines them into a short recap to prepare viewers for the next season. Amazon has also described the latest Video Recaps features as an AI system that can automatically generate short, theatrical-style summaries of an entire season. It’s going to build on Prime Video’s 2024 release of X-Ray Recaps, the AI-powered features that create spoiler-free, easy-to-digest text summaries of major cliffhangers, character-driven plot points, and other crucial details.

But unlike those text-based notes, the latest Video recaps tool uses a generative AI to pull together visuals, narration, music, and snippets of dialogue. The idea behind this newest feature is simple: to give the viewers a summary of essential story arcs without having to rewatch hours of content. This technology behind these recaps analyses the season’s most important beats, the turning points, character developments, and emotionally significant scenes. Once identified, the system stitches them together using voice-over narration, snippets of dialogue, and background score to create a polished highlight reel. Amazon also stated that this will provide a more immersive and valuable experience compared with the older X-Ray Recaps, which offered only written summaries. The company calls Video Recaps the first-of-its-kind application of generative AI on a major streaming service, designed to make long-running shows more accessible for viewers who need a quick refresher after months between seasons.

This feature is currently in beta and limited to users in the United States, and only for select English-language Prime Original series. However, broader availability is expected in the coming weeks and months. Amazon has also stated that the Video Recaps will work mainly on home streaming devices, including the Amazon Fire TV Stick, for titles included in the beta rollout. Mobile and web support may follow later, but that hasn’t been confirmed. For India, there is no official word yet. Prime Video users in the country will have to wait until Amazon decides to expand the rollout, something that may depend on how well the feature performs during this initial testing phase.
