New Delhi: On Tuesday, the White House will unveil a programme to help Americans identify devices less susceptible to cyberattack, working with businesses including Amazon, Google, and Best Buy.
The White House announced that this new certification and labelling programme would raise the cybersecurity requirements for smart appliances like refrigerators, microwaves, televisions, air conditioners, and fitness trackers.
Manufacturers and retailers will affix a “U.S. Cyber Trust Mark” logo to their devices, and the program is set to be operational by 2024.
An unnamed senior administration official stated that the initiative seeks to enhance the security of networks and their utilization, as it is crucial for both economic and national security.
According to the White House, the Federal Communications Commission will solicit public opinion before implementing the labelling programme and establish a national framework with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Other participants in the program include LG Electronics U.S.A., Logitech, Cisco Systems, and Samsung.
The White House’s national cyber policy, revealed in March, emphasized the need for software developers and businesses to take greater responsibility for securing their systems against hacking. Additionally, the Department of Defence and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have stepped up their efforts to counter the global activities of ransomware groups and hackers.
