WhatsApp dips toes into advertising with Status Ads for select users

New Delhi: Meta is preparing for the latest upgrade in WhatsApp, which will include a significant Android Beta update, featuring Ads and Promoted Channels. These two long-awaited features are aimed at helping businesses and creators expand their reach on the world’s most-used messaging application. These tools are now rolling out in the WhatsApp beta version 2.25.21.11, and are currently available to select Android beta testers.

What are Status Ads in WhatsApp?

This WhatsApp equivalent of Instagram Stories ads, and this status ads feature will enable the business accounts to display sponsored content in the users status feed, by which the creators reach can increased by this features, and these ads will appear in the between of the usual updates from the friends and the family members but it will be marked as sponsored, so the users can distinguish between personal posts and promotional contents.

What are the promoted channels?

Next thing is setting up the Promoted Channels, which have been designed to help the public channels gain more visibility within WhatsApp’s directory, much like the status ads, promoted channels will carry the sponsored labels to differentiate them from the organic suggestions. When the business or creator pays to promote their channels, it gets bumped up in the visibility rankings, making it easier for potential followers to discover and engage with their content. It will be a game-changer for content creators, enhancing their visibility on the most widely used messaging application.

Users’ privacy remains intact

Despite all of these concerns around advertising on private messaging platforms, WhatsApp insists that the user’s privacy remains unaffected. Ads won’t leak into any private chats, and Meta says the promotional features are confined strictly to public-facing areas, such as Status and Channels.

However, the previous beta version 2.25.19.15 of WhatsApp has already begun testing a feature allowing users to download detailed ad activity on WhatsApp. These reports include information about which ads were shown to the users’ status feed, who the advertisers were, and on what dates users saw them, bringing a level of transparency that’s uncommon in the traditional ad ecosystems. With these latest tools, WhatsApp is finally stepping more confidently into the ad-driven creator economy, long dominated by platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. For everyday users, the updates might bring a touch of annoyance, but for small businesses and creators, this could be a much-needed boost for them in terms of reach.
