OpenAI unlocks group chats now you can brainstorm with friends and AI

New Delhi: Recently, OpenAI has announced its latest GPT 5.1 for advanced conversation, and now, after this announcement, they have decided that talking to an AI on users’ own is so last season. The company has recently unveiled a group chat for ChatGPT, its first-ever shared experience for ordinary users, letting people team up with their friends, family, or any of their office colleagues in a single conversation and brainstorm with an AI referee watching over the chaos. This latest feature is rolling out as a pilot in just four regions for now: Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. But still, OpenAI stated that it plans to widen access once it gathers early feedback.

Now let’s know this feature widely with this group chats, users can bring their friends, family, or coworkers into a shared space to plan, make decisions, or work through ideas together. It is essentially the company’s answer to the collaboration tools already offered by rivals like Meta AI and Anthropic, but baked directly into ChatGPT’s familiar interface. Users can start a group by tapping the latest people icon that now sits quietly in the corner of the application. ChatGPT then generates a shareable link, which anyone with an account, free or paid, can use to join. Up to 20 people can pile into one conversation, which is either a great way to design a project or a guaranteed way to never agree on anything ever again.

If the users want to turn an existing one-on-one conversation chat into a group, ChatGPT politely creates a copy of the original thread, so the users’ private conversation remains intact while the group gets its own fresh chat to build on. Each of the participants sets up a profile with the name, username, and photo, helping everyone keep track of who’s typing and who’s overusing emojis. Group chats sit nearly in the latest sidebar section, ready to be revisited for planning holidays, rewriting presentations, or arguing over dinner plans with AI-mediated diplomacy. OpenAI has also stated that the chatbot now behaves differently inside the groups. Instead of responding to every single message, it evaluates the flow and waits for the right moment to jump in. Users can also summon it by tagging it, much like a very patient colleague who never complains.

After all of this, group chats use the GPT-5.1 Auto, which selects the best model available to each of the participants. Which means if one friend has ChatGPT Pro and another is still using the free one, the AI will send responses tailored individually to each account. Same of the chat, different model strengths, a curious but useful twist.
