New Delhi: OpenAI is setting up for the latest launch of its next-gen GPT-5 language model in August, with an open-source model expected to arrive even earlier, likely by the end of this month. These announcements come at a time when artificial intelligence companies are racing to release more powerful and accessible tools for developers and users worldwide. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently announced that the company is releasing GPT-5 soon during a conversation on a podcast. Without revealing many specifics, Altman hinted that the GPT-5’s reasoning abilities are a step above those of the current versions. A moment when the GPT-5 solved the complex question that he couldn’t answer, by calling it a surprising experience and referring to it as a ” here it is moment.
By some sources, familiar with the OpenAI’s plans suggest that the GPT-5 will be officially introduced in early August, the latest model will part of OpenAI’s strategy to combine its GPT and o-series technologies into one system, making it easier for the users and developers to work with, this integration is expected to simplify the process of choosing between models, especially for the tasks that rely on reasoning.
OpenAI has not shared official details yet, but the introduction might include multiple versions of GPT-5: -5 main version, a smaller mini version, and an even lighter nano version. While all three will be accessible through OpenAI’s API, only the main and mini versions are expected to be available directly within ChatGPT. The nano version, on the other hand, is likely to remain limited to API access.
While the GPT-5 launch is gaining the attention of the users and developers who regularly use ChatGPT as part of their daily routine, OpenAI is also planning to release an open-weight AI model even before the August rollout. This model is expected to launch by the end of July. According to some sources, the open model will be similar to the O3 mini, featuring robust reasoning capabilities and providing the AI community with access to powerful tools without restrictions.
This open model will be made available via multiple platforms, including Microsoft Azure, Hugging Face, and other major cloud services. This release could help OpenAI compete with companies like Meta and Mistral, which have already been releasing several open models this year. This GPT-5 might be the biggest step for OpenAI, putting artificial intelligence ahead of other AI platforms.
