New Delhi: The world has just come to a giant milestone in computer science: artificial general intelligence (AGI), claims Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang. He made this strong statement on X (formerly Twitter) following the announcement of OpenAI’s latest AI model, GPT-6 Astra.
AGI: A computer program that can think and learn in many disciplines, and nearly as human as an actual human. Unlike the majority of AI tools currently in use, which typically excel at one or two tasks, such as generating text or answering queries, this is capable of doing a myriad of tasks. An AGI system would be able to take on new and unfamiliar tasks without having to be specially trained for every individual task.

Huang highlighted the innovation and commended the work of the OpenAI team in his post, offering some technical insights into the development of the new model. The model GPT-6 ‘Astra’ was trained with over 100,000 instances of Nvidia’s powerful computer systems dubbed ‘Grace Blackwell’. He also emphasized the quick development of the AI industry from ChatGPT to the more sophisticated o1 model and now Astra in just four years. Another 400,000 Nvidia chips were soon going to be switched on to fuel future AI work, Huang added.
Interestingly, Huang’s first post about the training had mentioned an even bigger number 300,000 systems. He later deleted that post and he shared the smaller number without giving any reason for how he got there.
According to OpenAI, GPT-6 Astra is the smartest and most comported model that the company has produced up till now. The firm claims to have outstanding results in all challenging computer, software coding, science and cybersecurity assessments. But OpenAI hasn’t explicitly stated that this model is a legitimate representation of AGI.
Not all agree with Huang’s assertion. But there are many AI researchers who have said that they have a different definition of AGI than that. Some say that the arrival of a true human-level machine intelligence is imminent: Astra is a major turning point; others say it’s merely another promising step forward.
