Govt Tightens AI Compliance Rules, Startups Call It “Innovation Slowdown”

New Delhi: The Central Government has made a significant step this week by presenting more rigorous compliance requirements to artificial intelligence provided on Indian territory. The new framework will introduce AI startups to have comprehensive records of training data origins, the third-party audit of the high-risk AI models, and the explicit grievance redressal system to users.

Though the government claims that it is a step that is necessary to prevent misinformation, partiality and misuse of AI tools, several founders of startups have come out to raise concerns. Some of the early AI firms allege that the compliance cost might add to the cost of operation and sluggish product introductions. Smaller firms, particularly those that lack good funding sources, might not be able to afford independent auditors and legal personnel.

The analysts of the industry are split. Others are optimistic that a high level of regulation will establish confidence in the Indian AI products in the world, and avert future scandals. Other people claim that India stands to lose out its competitive edge in case innovations are over-regulated.
