New Delhi: Google is rolling out new AI features, and now this time Google have announced that AI summaries will be available in Discover, the important news feed in the Google search application. This latest feature, which is now available on Android and iOS, replaces headlines from major publications and instead displays an AI-generated summary with the logo of news publications in the top left corner. Along with this, some sources have picked up the information.
If the users tap on the overlapping icons in the top left corner, it will reveal a More button that will show all of the linked articles. This feature also shows a three-line preview before the users tap on the see more button to expand the AI-generated summary. Google has also displayed a warning saying that AI-generated content can make mistakes, which is said by Google itself.
From some sources, AI summaries are not appearing for all of the news stories in the Google applications, and when the publications reached out to Google to determine if it was a test, a company spokesperson confirmed that it was currently rolling out for those living in the United States. This AI summary will basically focus on trending lifestyle topics like sports and entertainment, with Google claiming that it will make it much easier for users to determine which pages they want to visit.
However, adding the AI-generated summaries in the Google Discover, the company are now also working on the latest way to showcase news on the Discover, which will include showing the bullet points below the headlines. It does not bear the labels generated by the AI label. While we discuss whether AI-generated summaries are useful for the users, it is a huge cause of concern in the publishing industry, which has seen a dip in traffic and revenue since AI eliminates the need to visit the websites.
