New Delhi: Mozilla has finally crashed the AI browser party, and instead of quietly taking a seat, it is rearranging its decision. The company has recently unveiled its latest AI Window, a new mode inside the Firefox that puts an AI assistant directly into their browsing experience, but crucially, lets users decide which AI model to use. In an era where Chrome and Edge are nudging users deeper into their own AI ecosystems, Mozilla’s message is pretty straightforward: choice isn’t dead yet, which is an excellent line they have said to this browsing industry and to its rival.
A dedicated AI-powered experience that sits alongside Firefox’s classic and private browsing modes. This latest AI Window marks the browser’s most significant leap into an AI territory. Unlike its rivals, Mozilla isn’t making users pledge loyalty to a single AI system to get smarter tabs or help draft an email. Instead, it’s opening the door to a mix-and-match approach, keeping things more flexible for those who don’t want to be tethered to Big Tech’s preferred chatbot. Mozilla couldn’t resist the gentle jab at the competition. While others are building an AI experiences that keep the users locked in a conversational loop, Mozilla see a different path. Its vision for AI is less about trapping the users inside the endless chat threads and more about using the technology to assist, guide and complement the open web, classic Mozilla ethos, just with a neural network or two attached.
But if we discuss this latest AI Window, it is still not able to download, but development is happening in that open space, with user feedback intentionally designed into the process. A waitlist has already gone live, representing Mozilla’s attempt to build hype while shaping the feature publicly, a sharp contrast to the heavily controlled rollouts of Chrome and Edge. This isn’t Mozilla’s first AI experiment, but it’s easily its most ambitious. Last autumn, Firefox gained a quirky shake to summarise tools on iPhone that generated AI-powered webpage overviews when the users shook their device.
Firefox currently controls roughly 3% the desktop browser market, while Chrome surges ahead with about 65%. Meanwhile, Google keeps embedding Gemini across Chrome, and Microsoft has turned Edge into a Copilot showroom. If the browsers are becoming AI playgrounds, Mozilla knows it can’t afford to sit on the sidelines. Mozilla is still in the race of browsers by offering a good quality of experience to their users, with perfect loyalty, they have stated.
