According to Perplexity, users who tried Comet asked 6 to 18 times more questions to Perplexity. The Comet Assistant serves as a personal AI assistant, allowing users to get answers to any questions directly on any webpage. The AI can even search for flight tickets and shop online, as per the prompt from the users. This announcement comes at a time when Google has integrated Gemini into Chrome. Earlier this year, Perplexity made a $34.5 billion acquisition of Chrome. Perplexity launched Comet in July this year, only for Perplexity Max subscribers; others who wanted to try out Comet had to put their name on the waitlist.
Over the year, a significant debate in the world of AI has been the right of AI companies to use information online to train their models. Now, Perplexity has seemingly found the solution with the Comet Plus. Comet Plus is a $5 subscription for users and the AI Assistants’ access to journalism content, while compensating publishers. The company has roped in a handful of partners at the launch of Comet Plus. And now this is all free for the users to use.
