ChatGPT suffers memory wipe for some users: Steps to prevent data loss

New Delhi: ChatGPT users have reported that their saved ChatGPT memories have disappeared without any warning. While the memory feature is especially designed to make interactions more personal by remembering preferences and past conversations, it has apparently failed. OpenAI also confirmed that the glitch was responsible for the issue and stated it has since been resolved. However, several users continue to report missing or incomplete. The memory features are particularly valuable for frequent users of ChatGPT, and the loss of stored preferences has sparked concern about the data reliability.

Many of the users know how the ChatGPT memory features work, which helps the AI remember some essential things about users over time, making their chats feel more personal and consistent. Rather than starting fresh each time a user has the latest conversation, ChatGPT can use what it already knows to make replies more helpful and relevant. ChatGPT securely saves small pieces of context to improve the continuity between chats, such as recalling that users prefer short summaries and Hindi-English mixed responses when memory is enabled.

This feature stops working, or if the saved data is cleared or lost, all of the previously remembered details will be erased. This effectively resets ChatGPT to its default state, which means it will no longer recall users’ preferences or past discussions. Users would then need to reintroduce any crucial details, just like starting fresh. If the users are unsure whether the user’s memory feature is still active, users can check it by following the steps:

  • Open the ChatGPT application or website.
  • Go to the user profile and select Personalisation.
  • Make sure that both Reference saved memories and Reference chat history are turned on.

If the user’s ChatGPT memories disappear, try logging out and logging back in, as some users have reported success with this method. There’s no direct way to import the backups into ChatGPT’s memory settings yet. To restore them, the user will have to re-enter each one manually. Remember that with the topic. While OpenAI says the memory issue has been fixed, some users reported that they are still facing disruptions. Until the feature becomes more stable, taking regular backups and keeping personalisation toggles enabled remains the safest approach.
