New Delhi: OpenAI has started rolling out the refreshed ChatGPT personalities feature to users in India, giving people more control over how the chatbot sounds and behaves. Many of the users saw a pop-up on ChatGPT’s home page announcing the update. The message explained that they can now choose from different personality types to change the tone and style of the chatbot’s responses. OpenAI was the first to come up with them earlier this year, but the recent upgrades to the GPT 5.1 model have made these modes more expressive and consistent. Earlier, users could only adjust ChatGPT’s vibe by typing long instructions.
The feature is built directly into the interface and stays active throughout the conversation, even when the users start a new chat. It comes in Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical. This means users no longer need to tell ChatGPT to act like a friendly assistant or give me concise answers. These presets have been updated and resumed after the GPT 5.1 release. OpenAI has also stated that the feature only affects tone, not the model’s intelligence or capability.
This helpful feature is that it meets people where they are. Someone writing for work may want a more formal tone, while someone learning the latest topic may prefer the chatty, friendly style. A nerdy mode might work well for deep explanations, and a cynical mode might help users stress-test an idea. The update comes at a time when OpenAI reported preparing more releases; some reports also suggested that the GPT 5.2 model could be announced soon, which may further improve these personalities or even introduce new ones.
