Apple’s annual download charts for the US are out, and in that, ChatGPT has taken the No. 1 spot among the free iPhone applications this year. The AI application climbed from its No. 4 position last year and pushed ahead of giants like Threads, Google, TikTok, WhatsApp and Instagram. AI demand pushes ChatGPT ahead of the everyday essentials. ChatGPT topping the list over applications like Google Maps and Gmail shows how deeply AI has moved into daily life.
People are turning to the chatbot for quick answers, recommendations and learning, hinting that OpenAI could become a real challenger to Google in search on mobile devices. ChatGPT’s rise was expected. Back in March, it became the most downloaded application globally, surpassing TikTok and Instagram. Its rapid growth signals a shift in how users prefer to interact with the technology, moving from the traditional search tools to conversational AI for information and problem-solving. Apple listed Block Blast as the top free iPhone game and Minecraft as the top paid one. On iPad, YouTube led free downloads while Procreate topped paid downloads. Popular titles like Roblox, Fortnite, Geometry Dash and Stardew Valley also dominated the charts.
The rankings reflect the broader shift in digital behaviour, from creative tools like Procreate to entertainment staples like Netflix and Disney+. Apple’s lists show how people blend work, play and learning on their devices. But the ChatGPT’s rise to the top highlights the most significant trend of all, and now AI is becoming a daily companion rather than a novelty.
