AI Enters in US Army Battlefield as Pentagon Signs Major Tech Deal

Pentagon: An important transformation is happening behind the doors of the US Department of Defense, based in The Pentagon. In a series of secret contracts, the US military forces have joined hands with some of the most prominent artificial intelligence firms in the world such as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Nvidia, and SpaceX. Although collaborations with technology giants in defense are not uncommon, there is something much more serious happening here that should definitely catch the attention of Indian policymakers.

One of the defining characteristics of the current trend is that AI technologies are becoming a part of the regular military work in a very short time frame. Processes that previously demanded a lot of human involvement, for example, analyzing pictures captured by satellites and detecting possible threats, are now being performed by machine-driven software systems. What is even more important is that the introduction of the latest technologies enables decision-making on-the-go in the most complex scenarios. This feature alone could make AI a game changer in military operations.

Yet another feature of Pentagon’s strategy is the refusal to rely on just one technology company. Instead, there are several players involved, each of which provides a particular piece in the puzzle of modern warfare. Specifically, advanced semiconductor solutions offered by Nvidia will allow for quicker computations, while reliable cloud infrastructure provided by Microsoft and Amazon Web Services will enable the scaling of data processing and protection. On top of that, OpenAI and Google are developing cutting-edge AI models to analyze situations and predict actions. Finally, SpaceX is providing satellite communication and observation capabilities. This multi-party solution demonstrates Pentagon’s approach to creating a strong technological foundation for future wars.

Nonetheless, it would be wrong to think that everything is going smoothly. There are some controversies around this initiative that need to be mentioned. First, despite all the efforts to engage technology firms, some companies are hesitant to cooperate. It is noteworthy that one of the major companies in the AI sphere, Anthropic, did not join Pentagon’s initiative. It seems that Anthropic takes a conservative approach to its cooperation with the military by focusing only on non-harmful tasks such as search and rescue operations. Second, controversies are also present within companies themselves. As we have already seen in the past, employee protests against the involvement of their companies in military operations were not rare. This situation indicates that some employees still have ethical concerns related to this issue.

From an international perspective, these events indicate the beginning of a new kind of competition between countries. While the US is not alone in its actions, they seem to be quite urgent, especially considering that rapid developments are happening in China. In fact, as it is pointed out by defense analysts, future military conflicts will be determined not by the amount of military hardware that one country has but by its ability to quickly process information and take appropriate action.
