10 sectors critical to AI infrastructure

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is gradually replacing the old ways of doing things. This gradual replacement has meant increased demand for AI services and infrastructure, with demand set to grow over the years. According to Stanford University’s 2025 AI Index Report, AI is poised to become the most transformative technology of the 21st century. It has entered every domain, every part of our lives, and will continue to do so, improve and enhance the solutions it provides.

For a layman, there is more to AI than the chatbot that you rely on to know to help you with everything under the sun. It is a sophisticated ecosystem that requires multiple levels of cooperation, services, and infrastructure to make it all happen. With the AI market expected to reach $4.8 trillion by 2030, here are 10 sectors that have witnessed an unprecedented surge in demand, and that’s estimated to continue over the years.

Data Center Construction and Management: High-density data centers form the backbone of AI, handling compute, storage, and connectivity at scale

What makes it critical?

Data Centers are the CPUs behind the AI infrastructure. It bundles high-density compute, storage, power, and connectivity that are work together to make AI possible to work for you. Data centers are the physical infrastructure that act as the hubs for AI computing.

These highly complex infrastructure setups are crucial to meet the ever-growing traffic from AI  systems with data center investments expected to reach up to $5.2 trillion by 2030, according to estimates by McKinsey.

Semiconductor and Chip Manufacturing

Semiconductor and Chip Manufacturing: A sector critical to AI infrastructure
Semiconductor and Chip Manufacturing: Advanced GPUs and semiconductors enable AI’s computing power, making complex models and automation possible.

What makes it critical?

Semiconductors, specifically Graphics Processing Units (GPU) make advanced logic, memory and reasoning possible for AI to function. Highly advanced GPUs manipulate memory and perform parallel mathematical calculations to render images, videos and 3D graphics. These GPUs require meeting stringent quality control measures to fulfill the demands put forth by AI, with semiconductor fabrication units (fabs) working overtime to meet the increased demand. According to various estimates, we will require 254 billion high-performance AI chips to meet demand, with the overall semiconductor market to reach a valuation of $1.6 trillion by 2030.

Renewable and Industrial Energy Utilities

Renewable and Industrial Energy Utilities: A sector critical to AI infrastructure
Renewable and Industrial Energy Utilities: AI data centers demand massive, reliable energy, pushing investments in renewables and industrial power systems.

What makes it critical?

Data Centers enormous amounts of a reliable, consistent sources of power, without which these data centers cannot operate. Many data center projects now come with in house power generation capabilities, supporting the energy demand received from the local grids. With renewable power plants preferred, global energy investments for AI are expected to reach 945-1,000 TWh by 2030, even as the total energy consumed by AI data centers will increase from 1.5% currently.

Fiber-Optic Communication and Networking

Fiber-Optic Communication and Networking: A sector critical to AI infrastructure
Fiber-Optic Communication and Networking: High-speed fiber networks ensure seamless data transfer, enabling real-time AI applications globally.

What makes it critical?

High-capacity fiber-optic communication and networking infrastructure will become increasingly important in the coming years, as demand for high-speed internet from enterprises and households is expected to surge with the adoption of AI. The global fiber optic cable market is expected to reach about $112 billion by 2028 from $85 billion in 2024.

Industrial Precision Cooling Systems

Industrial Precision Cooling Systems: A sector critical to AI infrastructure
Industrial Precision Cooling Systems: Advanced cooling systems prevent overheating in AI data centers, ensuring efficiency and uninterrupted performance.

What makes it critical?

Data centers require highly advanced cooling systems, as the high volumes of computing and the high energy required can generate high volumes of heat. To keep the semiconductors and equipment within thermal limits, advanced air cooling systems are required that cost hundreds of millions of dollars. In 2025, these industrial precision cooking systems raked in revenues of USD 1.2 billion with increased demand heading it towards USD 51 billion by 2030 globally.

Cybersecurity Services

Cybersecurity Services: Robust cybersecurity protects AI models, data pipelines, and infrastructure from evolving digital threats.
Cybersecurity Services: Robust cybersecurity protects AI models, data pipelines, and infrastructure from evolving digital threats.

What makes it critical?

AI infrastructure requires strong safeguards at every layer (APIs, models, data pipelines, GPUs) to protect the sensitive and confidential data from falling into the wrong hands. With AI models now being sophisticated enough to think and make decisions on their own, the importance of such safeguards remains crucial. Currently, the global cybersecurity market is worth about USD 250 billion, and it could reach USD 700 billion by 2034.

Cloud Service Providers (CSPs)

Cloud Service Providers (CSPs): A sector critical to AI infrastructure
Cloud Service Providers (CSPs): Cloud platforms enable scalable AI deployment, making advanced tools accessible to enterprises worldwide.

What makes it critical?

Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) offer accessible, customized platforms to implement enterprise AI systems, with multinationals, governments and other organizations depending on them to scale up their AI systems. The current market for public cloud services is expected to almost double from USD 805 billion in 2024.

Data Management and Storage Platforms

Data Management and Storage Platforms: A sector critical to AI infrastructure
Data Management and Storage Platforms: AI relies on massive datasets, making efficient storage and management systems mission-critical.

What makes it critical?

As a virtual employee, AI models have to be trained to understand how to carry out certain tasks, and data banks and training systems form the backbone for this crucial step. Existing data storage systems have been growing steadily to meet this need, with the data storage market expected to reach USD 40 billion by the 2030s.
