After conquering India in a decade, Jio plans to export its affordable 5G tech stack

Reliance Jio Infocomm, now India’s number one mobile telecom provider, is now looking to export its homegrown technology stack as it nears its 10th anniversary. The Mukesh Ambani-led company, which pioneered cheap 4G internet for millions of Indians, is now looking to become a exporter of technology after building the world’s largest 5G customer base outside China, with 268.5 million 5G users based on its homegrown technology platforms.

Jio is credited with lowering the average cost of one gigabyte of mobile data from Rs.228 in September 2016 to just Rs.7.9 within a decade, a nearly 97% reduction. Mobile data consumption on Jio’s network has surged to 42.3 GB, up from less than 0.2 GB industry-wide before its launch, as the company developed its own tech stack to meet immense demand.

Jio’s modular 5G tech stack can be highly favourable for countries looking to scale their 5G networks by using open standard interfaces, avoiding high licensing fees and vendor markups. The technology stack can handle high data traffic volumes across diverse geography, using 5G Core, Radio Access Network (RAN), Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), and OSS/BSS (Operations and Business Support Systems).

Ahead of its planned IPO, Reliance Jio is looking to tap into its more than 6,800 patents across 4G, 5G, 6G, AI and cloud technologies as it looks to become a global technology vendor from being primarily a connectivity service provider.

With the experience gained in India, Jio is looking to offer cloud native raio access networks, 5G core systems and AI-driven automation tools to other global telecom operators to help them set up, manage or upgrade their 5G infrastructure more efficiently.
