London: Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis predicts that AI will create very valuable jobs, and students should embrace the use of AI models. However, learning fundamental concepts in maths, physics and computer sciences is equally important to understanding how AI works, he said while speaking at the SXSW in London.
Demis predicts that AI will benefit “technically savvy people who are at the forefront of using these technologies.” It is fast becoming the next big revolution in technology, much similar to the industrial revolution and the internet era, he says, even as there are widespread fears of job losses due to increased automation for routine tasks.
Just as practical skills like coding have been integrated into the curriculum, Demis recommends students should also learn how AI works and understand the best way of utilizing them in novel ways.
The next generation of children now have to become ‘AI native’ just as previous generations grew up understanding ways of using the internet.
At Google’s I/O conference in May, Hassabis has predicted AI-based solutions which could match or exceed human capabilities. These advancements could arrive by 2030 and students need to urgently skill themselves for a future where AI skills become the norm.
Though some companies have had to re-hire for roles they replaced with AI, Hassabis maintains that AI will eventually evolve into super-taskers where a single bot can replace an entire team of professionals.
