2026 could be Siri’s year: Apple opens doors to ChatGPT and Gemini

New Delhi: Apple has seen a great time in selling its recently launched iPhone 17 series, but the Cupertino tech giant has been facing some challenges bringing the AI-powered Siri to its latest devices. Apple had planned to release the much-awaited update earlier this year, but the launch was once again delayed, with the tech giant saying it will now launch the Siri update sometime next year. In an interview with some sources, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the company is now on track to launch the upgraded Siri next year. He also went on to say that Apple was also considering partnerships with AI companies like OpenAI and Google to integrate their AI chatbots into Apple Intelligence.

Apple’s software engineering chief Craig Federighi has explained that the first-generation architecture that was being developed for the personalised Siri was too limited and not up to the company’s standards, and realised it still has a long way to go before it could add the latest capabilities to Siri. It looks like the latest Siri features will be coming with the iOS 26.4 update. During the company’s recent earnings call, Tim Cook stated that they are making good progress on AI Siri and that they are open to pursuing M&A if they think it will advance their roadmap. They have also talked about Trump’s tariffs. Apple confirmed that it incurred $1.1 billion in additional costs in the third quarter and is expecting $1.4 billion in tariff costs in the December quarter.

From several reports, it has been hinted that Apple is considering a partnership with Anthropic, Google and Perplexity to offer an AI search tool for Siri, but the delay has already prompted class action lawsuits from users. Apple is also working on some significant upgrades to some of its most popular devices, including the MacBook Air, iPad Air and iPad Mini. In reports, it also suggests that the tech giant is testing these products with the OLED screens, which deliver deeper blacks, improve contrast and have a broader range of colours.
