When the Shoe Doesn’t Fit, Build Your Own: House of Avi’s Inclusive Footwear Story

For years, many people have walked into stores only to walk out disappointed, not because they didn’t like the shoes, but because the shoes didn’t fit them. House of Avi (HOA) is a brand built exactly for those people.

Launched in 2019 by Avinash Kumar, CEO and Founder of House of Avi, the brand was not just another fashion startup, but a response to a long-ignored problem in the footwear industry, lack of size inclusivity. His personal struggle of not finding the right fit for over two decades became the driving force behind creating a brand that refuses to cater only to the “average.”

At its core, HOA challenges a simple idea: why should anyone have to compromise on comfort or style because of their foot size? While clothes can be altered, shoes cannot. Recognising this gap, Avinash Kumar set out to design footwear that fits real people, not just standard size charts.

Blending Indian craftsmanship with modern global design, House of Avi has carved a niche for itself. The brand’s manufacturing base in Uttar Pradesh plays a key role, where skilled artisans, many from generations of shoemaking families, handcraft each pair. Unlike many large brands that rely on mass production and synthetic materials, HOA focuses on genuine leather and strong construction designed to last.

Though digital-first in its approach, the brand has managed to establish a strong pan-India presence, delivering to every corner of the country. At the same time, its reach has expanded globally, with increasing demand from markets like the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia.

Among its standout products are traditional Juttis and the signature Avircazz sandals. While Juttis bring together comfort and heritage, the Avircazz stands out for its unique concept. Inspired by the Spanish Avarca sandal, it has been reimagined into a hybrid design that offers the comfort of a sandal with the structure of a shoe. This innovation has helped HOA create a distinct identity in a crowded market.

The brand’s collaboration with Tanya Herbert, who holds the Guinness World Record for the largest female feet, further highlights its commitment to inclusivity and has boosted its international visibility.

Currently, House of Avi operates on a demand-driven manufacturing model, producing thousands of pairs each month. What truly sets it apart is its size range, from US 4 to US 20, far beyond what most mainstream brands offer. Its portfolio includes over 50 designs across categories for women, men, and unisex styles.

Affordability is another strong point. With pricing between ₹999 and ₹2,750, HOA ensures that quality handcrafted footwear remains accessible. This is in sharp contrast to many global brands that charge premium prices while often compromising on durability.

The growing demand reflects the brand’s impact. Customers who once struggled to find the right fit are now not only buying but returning. For many, HOA is not just a purchase—it’s a solution. This has led to strong customer loyalty and organic growth through word of mouth.

Looking ahead, Avinash Kumar has outlined ambitious plans for the brand. Over the next 18 to 24 months, House of Avi aims to scale manufacturing, expand into more product categories including formal and athletic footwear, and strengthen its international presence. Sustainability and a stronger “Make in India” focus are also key priorities.
