New Delhi: According to recent reports, entrepreneur Elon Musk is said to be in the process of creating a new startup focused on artificial intelligence (AI) with the intention of competing with OpenAI, one of the leading generative AI companies that Musk co-founded back in 2015. Although he stepped down from OpenAI’s board in 2018, Musk’s new AI startup could put him in competition with other tech giants like Microsoft and Google as they work to develop the next generation of AI technologies.
Sources suggest that Musk has already begun assembling a team of AI researchers and engineers and is said to be in discussions with investors from SpaceX and Tesla about the upcoming venture. According to the reports, a number of investors have expressed their excitement and are keen to get involved with the project.
This news comes just weeks after an anonymous source revealed that Musk had procured almost 10,000 graphics processing units to help power Twitter’s AI initiatives. On top of this, Musk also recently incorporated a new company called X (X.AI), with himself listed as the sole director. He has even gone so far as to change the name of Twitter to X Corp in company filings as part of his larger plans to create an “everything app” under the “X” brand.
Interestingly, despite his apparent enthusiasm for AI development, Musk was one of more than 2,600 tech leaders and researchers who signed an open letter calling for a temporary pause on further AI development, citing concerns about the “profound risks to society and humanity.” It remains to be seen how this apparent contradiction will be reconciled or what approach Musk’s new AI startup will take in addressing these concerns.
Meanwhile, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has also joined the AI race with the launch of its new initiative, Amazon Bedrock. The platform will enable AWS users to build out generative AI from foundation models (FMs) and marks the latest effort by the company to expand its AI offerings.
As the AI industry continues to grow and evolve, it seems likely that we will see more companies and individuals entering the fray, each bringing their own unique perspectives and approaches to the field. The competition is sure to be fierce, but the ultimate winner will likely be society as a whole, as new and innovative AI technologies are developed that can help us address some of the world’s most pressing problems.
