New Delhi: The AI startup ecosystem in India has made a significant stride by scoring its first unicorn with Bengaluru-based startup Sarvam AI, which has joined the country’s growing list of top AI startups. The AI startup universe in India just etched a milestone by becoming a unicorn outfit with Sarvam AI based in Bengaluru, gaining entry to the country’s list of leading AI startups. The company struck up another $234 million in a new round of funding, achieving a new valuation of $1.5 billion. The $1bn-plus valuation is reserved for start-ups which are called unicorns.
The funding round was led by the Indian IT major HCLTech, which will invest about $150 million and have a 10.5% stake in the firm. The round is also going to be included with the investments from existing backers and other investors, such as Bessemer Venture Partners. The investment comes as the first installment of Sarvam AI’s bigger Series B fundraising round that seeks a total of $300M.
The company Sarvam AI was founded in 2023, with a vision of developing cutting-edge AI technologies that cater to the unique needs of India. They create large language models, voice AI systems, and other AI products that cater to several Indian languages. It aims to enable the development and control of AI systems within India, also known as “sovereign AI.”
The recent investment indicates the increasing confidence of investors in the AI industry in India. AI is a rapidly budding field and currently, local government and companies are turning to the use of locally produced AI platforms to address language and culture requirements around the world. Sarvam AI strives to be one of the others who are on the journey toward that vision.
The new investment will be directed towards expanding its AI models, increasing computing capacity, and speeding up its research and product initiatives. The money will also enable Sarvam to assert itself further in the booming AI industry, which continues to be fiercely competitive, both internationally and domestically.
The investment is also noteworthy for HCLTech, as the company’s highest and one of the biggest-ever strategic investments in an AI startup. In response to the announcement, HCLTech’s stock market shares inched up indicating the perceived optimism of investors in the liaison and future avenues in AI.
The success of Sarvam AI on being listed as a unicorn is yet another example of the boom that is taking place in the field of Artificial Intelligence in India. The startup’s growth in an earlier stage, backed by substantial funding and innovative technology development, along with its focus on Indian languages, should have a meaningful role in India’s AI transformation and bolster India’s representation in the international technology landscape.
