Deepinder Goyal’s Temple device Iintroduces ‘Entropy’ biomarker to track body’s energy

New Delhi: Deepinder Goyal’s health-tech start-up Temple has come up with a new biomarker, “Entropy”, the company says, which can measure the energy the body expends during real-time metabolic processes the same energy supply consumed to keep the body alive and maintain its daily activities. This is another significant development for the wearable device and its distinctive health-monitoring capabilities.

Most fitness trackers are based on heart rate from the wrist, but Temple’s is on the side of the head, near the temple area. It indicates this site is where the device can capture more vivid physiological signals from the superficial temporal artery, enabling more precise capture of metabolic and nervous system activity of the body.

Temple says that Entropy will accurately reflect the “cost of being alive” of each person’s body, tracking energy usage. The score is changed each second, and will show a number between 1 and 250. High scores will denote intense physical activity or exertion, and low scores denote deep rest or relaxation.

The firm says that Entropy is always monitoring variables like sleep, stress, exercise, eating, drinking caffeine, meditation, and even exposure to cold. These enable the observation of real-time measurements of how daily activities use the user’s body’s energy. In addition, two related metrics, the Entropy Maxima and Minima, have been introduced at Temple. The Entropy Maxima is the maximum level of metabolism an individual could attain when exerting physical effort, the Entropy Minima is the minimum at which the body would burn calories at rest. Through improvement of these measures over time, the company thinks it could help to glean clues about fitness and healthy aging.

Deepinder Goyal quoted the Temple team saying they had used an “Entropy equivalent to a laboratory grade metabolic cart, which is normally utilized for measurement of energy expenditure.” The company says the Entropy has a far higher correlation with activity level as measured by Metabolism than conventional heart-rate monitoring.

The Temple continues to be in Beta and only select users can get the units currently. The company states that with the launch of Entropy, it’s offering a game-changing innovation in personal health tracking, but some medical experts and researchers have been skeptical until more clinical studies and independent validation are performed. Peer-reviewed scientific studies are yet to conclusively confirm the technology’s accuracy and health benefits, said critics. Nevertheless, Temple is betting on becoming the next-generation wearable capable of tackling a new challenge: providing a richer understanding of metabolism, recovery, and long-term health than many current fitness trackers will do.
