Australian productivity software major Altassian buys browser startup The Browser Company for $610 million

New York: Altassian, the Australian productivity software major behind software development tools Jira and Confluence, has announced the acquisition of The Brower Company, a New York-based startup that has developed the Agnetic AI browser Dia for average use and the highly advanced AI-enabled Arc browser designed to help create complex workflows and heavy use.

Altassian has paid $610 million in cash for this startup, with an aim to disrupt the web browser market, where Google’s Chrome browser has held its dominance with a 69% share for years.

The deal aims to synergise both company’s strengths, with Atlassian planning to merge Arc’s and Dia’s AI-enabled tools with its highly popular enterprise software development tools to offer complementary services.

“This deal is about giving us the resources, distribution, and monetization muscle to get there.” Co-Founder Josh Miller, said on X, hoping that the deal will help The Browser Company make Arc and Dia as commonplace as Chrome. The company will operate independently after the acquisition.

Now that AI tools are becoming even more important for daily use, AI pioneer Chat GPT and search enhancer Perplexity have also jumped into the fray with their Aura and Comet browsers, respectively.

Both Perplexity and OpenAI had also expressed interest in acquiring The Brower Company, but Atlassian seems to have offered the company a better deal than both of them.

The company has held multiple fundraising rounds, with investors like Salesforce Ventures, , Fidji Simo, Reid Hoffman and Dylan Field investing in the company.

The company is aiming to close the acquisition by December, following approvals from relevant regulatory authorities.
