New Delhi: The government has put forth a proposal for the establishment of a dedicated mechanism to oversee the growth and development of startups, as their numbers have surged to over one lakh, announced Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh on Sunday. This mechanism aims to closely monitor the progress of startups and ensure their sustainability, particularly for those that have received technical and financial support from the government.

Minister Singh highlighted the evolving landscape of startups, emphasizing that they have expanded beyond the realms of Information Technology (IT) to include Biotech and Earth Sciences. He also noted the emergence of new opportunities in Oceanography. In addition, he dispelled certain misconceptions surrounding startups, such as age and educational qualifications, stating that anyone with a passion for innovation and creativity can embark on the journey of entrepreneurship, even after retirement.

Principal Scientific Advisor Ajay Kumar Sood proposed the introduction of a dedicated Startup Day and Week, akin to the National Technology Day and Week, to further promote and celebrate the startup ecosystem. This initiative would provide a platform for startups to showcase their innovations and accomplishments, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, S Chandrasekhar, emphasized the commitment of every participating startup in the Exposition to sustainable development. He mentioned the collective aspiration to achieve carbon neutrality and minimize environmental impact through initiatives like “Amritkaal.”

The occasion for Minister Singh’s remarks was the valedictory function and Awards Ceremony of the National Technology Week Exposition, held at Pragati Maidan. This event served as a platform for startups to exhibit their technologies, share insights, and receive recognition for their contributions to the innovation landscape.

In conclusion, the government’s proposed mechanism for overseeing startups acknowledges their growing numbers and seeks to ensure their continued progress and viability. The diversification of startups into new fields and the dispelling of myths regarding age and qualifications showcase the inclusive nature of the startup ecosystem. The suggestion for a dedicated Startup Day and Week and the focus on sustainable development highlight the commitment to foster innovation and environmental responsibility.
