Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is an Indian Women a self-made Billionaire entrepreneur, she is the chairperson of Biocon Limited and Biocon Biologics Limited which is based in Banglore, India and she was the former chairperson of the Indian Institute of Management of Science. In 2014, She was awarded by Othmer Gold Medal for her outstanding contribution to progress of the Science and Chemistry. She was listed in the Financial Times 2011 Top 50 Women in Business list. In 2019, She was Ranked in the 60th position as a powerful businesswoman in the world by Forbes. She was named EY World Entrepreneur in the year 2020 and after this much success, she got married to John Shaw. In 1989 she was awarded Padma Shri and in 2005 she was awarded Padma Bhushan.
Early Life and Education:
Kiran Mazumdar was born on 23 March 1953 in Bangalore, Karnataka State, and their parents are Gujarati, She was educated in Bangalore, at Bishop Cotton Girls’ School graduated in 1968, and then earned a bachelor’s degree and attended Mount Carmel College Bangalore, women offering pre-university courses as an affiliate of Bangalore university. She studied Biology and Zoology at Bangalore University and she earned a bachelor’s degree in zoology in 1973. Kiran Mazumdar hoped to go to medical school but she didn’t obtain a scholarship so she didn’t go to medical school. She went to Ballarat College in Melbourne University, to study malting and brewing. In 1974 she was the only woman who was enrolled in brewing courses and she topped her class and earned the degree of master in brewing in 1975.
Biocon Limited:
She worked as a trainee brewer in Carlton and United Breweries, Melbourne as a trainee maltster at Barrett Brothers and Burston, Australia. She also worked for some time as a technical trainee consultant at Jupiter Breweries Limited and then she investigated the possibility of advancing her knowledge in Bangalore and Delhi but she was not hired by the company because it was man’s work so she was not hired in India and then she looks aboard opportunity and then some times she gets offered a position in Scotland.
Before Mazumdar could move, she met with Leslie Auchincloss who was the founder of Biocon Biochemicals Limited of Cork, Ireland. Auchincloss’s company produces enzymes for use in brewing, food packaging, and textile industries. Auchincloss was looking for a partner in India for an Indian subsidiary supply in India for Papain. She accepted this and undertook the job for some time and after six months she was given the position of brewmaster she was running for this and for giving up in this field and now she is the 91st Billionaire in the world with a net worth of $3.6 Billion.
