Tarang Indrayan Vaish
Gurgaon: In an era when mass-produced fashion dominates wardrobes and marketplaces, entrepreneur Tarang Indrayan Vaish has carved a distinctive niche by placing India’s handmade heritage at the forefront of contemporary fashion. As the founder of Vivarang she has emerged as a leading voice in the revival of traditional textiles- an achievement built on passion, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in the power of Indian craftsmanship.
An Unlikely Beginning
Tarang’s entrepreneurial story did not begin in design studios or textile mills, but in classrooms and corporate training rooms. Armed with a B.A. (Hons.) in Economics and a postgraduate degree in Business Economics from Delhi University, she spent over two decades in sales training, and academics. A chance encounter with a beautifully handcrafted textile piece sparked a passion that would later reshape her career path. What began as a hobby, experimenting with handcrafted items and selling them to friends, soon revealed a larger purpose: preserving traditional crafts while empowering artisans.
The Birth of Vivarang
A certified Independent Director, Tarang founded Vivarang with a simple yet profound vision- to bring authentic handmade products to the mainstream while providing artisans an ecosystem to thrive and innovate. Her early days were marked by trial and error. Initial products, such as hand embroidered T-shirts, didn’t gain much traction. But Tarang persisted, refining her understanding of fabrics, techniques, and the unique stories behind each craft. Over time, she built relationships with weavers and artisans across India, from Bengal and Bihar to Gujarat, Telangana, and Rajasthan.
The Journey
Today, Vivarang offers a wide repertoire of handcrafted products including Kantha, Madhubani, Maheshwari, Kalamkari, Pattachitra, Kutchwork, Ajrakh, Shibori, Ikat, Warli, Chikankari, Bhujodi weaving, and more.
Her work has been celebrated for its cultural significance, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment to reviving India’s handloom legacy, earning her national recognition among leading women in business.
Vivarang’s innovation in Essence of India saree – a saree with four different artforms (Madhubani, Kalamkari, Pichwai and Kutch) is a testament to brand’s commitment towards promoting Indian artforms. Her story reminds us that entrepreneurship doesn’t always begin with a formal degree in the field, but with curiosity, courage, and the conviction to follow a calling.
Through Vivarang, Tarang has woven together not just fabrics, but hundreds of artisan stories, strengthening the threads of India’s rich craft heritage for future generations.
