Mumbai, October 20: Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Platforms Limited is all set to launch its initial public offering (IPO) on October 21, 2026, with a fresh issue of 27 crore shares with a total value of ₹30,187 crore (about $3.6 billion). This represents the largest public issue in Indian capital market history, with the proceeds expected to be used to repay or prepay its current borrowings, amounting to ₹27,500 crore, while the rest will be used toward general corporate purposes.
And that’s the fine print that is beyond the hype over the IPO. Reliance Jio has grown to become India’s largest telecom operator by subscriber base after it developed the infrastructure for the same, mostly on borrowed money, and this IPO is expected to address most of that.
Even today, almost 90% of its revenue comes from telecom services, as the company is looking to lower its overall leverage, reduce interest expense burdens and improve its return ratios, as it continues to invest into 5G expansion, cloud infrastructure and enterprise AI solutions.
Although it has Meta and Google onboard as partners, Jio is, in-effect a utility company, and it requires to continue to spend on upgrading its telecom infrastructure and continue to buy expensive spectrum from the government to expand its base. Such companies usually have a limited scope of growth, and that’s why Mukesh Ambani wants to transform it into a technology giant.
But this IPO is mostly aimed at settling its debt, and the company is banking on hype to attract investors. But that may not be enough for the transition towards a technology company, though Mukesh Ambani has bet on data centers, cloud computing and enterprise software under the Jio brand. For now, this IPO is just another way to raise hope amongst investors, but how the company converts that hope into execution remains to be seen.
