Gold Prices Touch New Highs, Experts Warn of Possible Sharp Correction

New Delhi, August 6: Gold Prices rebounded from a strong daily sell-off with prices hitting fresh record highs in key cities. The increases have come in reaction to global economic anxiety, a weaker dollar and greater demand for safe-haven assets. But as prices are close to all-time highs, the market experts are also cautioning about a sharp pullback in gold if the world’s conditions improve.

The latest bullion rates in Ahmedabad had seen 24 karat gold at Rs 152,850 per 10gms and 22 karat gold with a steep rise. The graph of gold price trends for the month indicates that gold prices were fluctuating during July prior to a robust rise in the first week of August. The recent upswing has driven prices to their higher levels in recent weeks.

Several factors internationally have been contributing to the recent surge in gold prices. It is no surprise that investors from all over the world are seeking to purchase gold as a safe investment amid uncertainty regarding the global economic growth and the changing interest rate expectations, along with geopolitical tension. A falling dollar and declining bond interest rates also have put gold in a better light for investors.

However, the World Gold Council (WGC) has suggested that investors must not assume that the price will just keep going up. The council feels gold has good long-term support but could move down in the event of a more rapid recovery in the global economy, less geopolitical tension and a high interest rate environment. In this positive economic outlook, gold prices could correct, and some market reports are suggesting that gold prices could drop sharply from current record levels.

Soaring prices are already having impact on consumers’ demand. The gold demand in India in the April-June quarter dropped to the lowest level in the last six years with many buyers delaying jewellery buying due to high gold prices, the industry data revealed. Although gold sales during the festivals were healthy, the record high prices led to a fall in the total amount of gold purchased by consumers.

Interestingly, Gujarat has seen another trend emerging. Many families have begun to sell to capitalize on record prices of old jewellery rather than purchase. According to reports, almost ₹3,800 crore worth of gold was sold among the Gujaratis in the first half of 2026. Meanwhile, a lot of investors are still investing in gold, anticipating that the gold prices would stay steady in the upcoming months.
