Ahmedabad: Bhujodi village in Kutch stands as a powerful centre of traditional craftsmanship and rural entrepreneurship. The village is home to 46 National Award-winning artisans, including 6 Sant Kabir Awardees, 20 National Award winners, 1 Shilp Guru, 4 Kalanidhi Awardees, and several National Merit Certificate and state-level Hastkala awardees.
The skilled weavers of the Vankar community preserve Gujarat’s royal-era textile heritage through their dedication and traditional artistry. Artisan Nanji Bhimjibhai Kharet shared that the entire village has received strong training and exhibition support from the Weavers Service Centre. Bhujodi artisans also collaborate with top brands like FabIndia, Jaypore, and Garvi Gujarat. Their village philosophy, “Kutchh na ranma, jya kala jivan che ane jivan aj kala” (In the Rann of Kutch, where art is life and life is an art), reflects their deep cultural identity.
Bhujodi is globally recognised for its handloom work, including the iconic Bhujodi Shawl, traditional woolen quilts, blankets, and products made with natural dyes and complex weaving techniques. These artisans are more than craftsmen, they are cultural conservators who protect Gujarat’s textile legacy while earning national and international acclaim.
The preservation and growth of this heritage will get a major boost as Bhujodi artisans participate in the 2nd Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) and the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Exhibition (VGRE) in Rajkot in January 2026. The event will feature a Dedicated Crafts Village, a Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet (RBSM) to connect MSMEs with global buyers, and an Udyami Mela offering financial and policy support. This platform is expected to unlock new export opportunities and strengthen the economic future of Bhujodi’s craft community.
