Surat: Singapore and Surat share an old connection when it comes to diamonds and jeans. These are the words of Singaporean High Commissioner to India Simon Wong. Wong, who delivered a speech during the inauguration of Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) 2026 at Auro University stated that every fourth diamond and denim jeans sold in Singapore are made in the diamond and textile city of Surat.
Singaporean High Commissioner Simon Wong’s speech at the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference enthralled the people of Surat. Singaporean High Commissioner Simon Wong greeted everyone with ‘Jai Shri Krishna’ and said that it is a a great day when three other important events have also been added to the day of the Regional Conference. Today is also the Foundation Day of Gujarat, today is also Buddha Purnima and Labor Day is also celebrated in the world.
Simon Wong said that there is a very old connection between Singapore and Gujarat, he said that in every four denim jeans worn by Singaporeans, the denim jeans fabric is manufactured in Surat. Moving on, he said that the total export of diamonds cut and polished in Surat to Singapore is a whopping $100 million. Every fourth diamond in cut and polished natural and rough diamonds sold in Singapore is crafted in Surat.
Wong stated that Gujarat alone contributes a whopping 50 percent to the total imports from India to Singapore. Petrochemicals, jewellery, textiles, pharmaceuticals and new machinery are being imported to Singapore in large quantities from Gujarat. Along with this, he also mentioned that if there is any country investing the most in India for the last 12 years, it is Singapore. Singapore has invested a total of $15 billion in India last year and in the last 14 years, Singapore has invested a total of $178 billion in India.
