PM Modi’s fresh Swadeshi push after 7.8% GDP Growth: ‘Don’t buy gold, don’t marry abroad’

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has again pulled for Swadeshi, urging Indians to spend more at home and less on foreign products. This is his latest message following India’s impressive real GDP growth of 7.8% in April-June quarter of FY2026-27. The growth was more than what was expected and despite the global tensions, wars, supply-chain issues and economic uncertainty.

Prime Minister Modi shared a video message on social media, congratulating Indians on their good economic performance. The growth was due to the hard work and collective strength of the people, he said. But the Prime Minister didn’t stop at celebrating GDP numbers. He took this opportunity to call for “Swadeshi”, “Vocal for Local” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat.” Citizens are being asked to stay away from foreign countries for only leisure, Modi said. He also urged the people not to arrange marriages overseas and to opt for India as a venue for marriages.

His message about gold was no less to the point. He advised people to refrain from purchasing gold unless they have to do it. Gold is one of the largest import items in India, minimizing unnecessary purchases can decrease India’s reliance on imports.

If there is an increase in spending on Indian products, services, tourism and Indian businesses, it can help to keep the money in the domestic economy, the Prime Minister said. He said that enhanced support to the local business will also facilitate India to become more self-reliant. Modi also lashed out at the “doomsdayers” who were raising concerns about India’s development. Modi has cited the GDP growth rate of 7.8% as proof that the economy is still going more forward even in the face of tough economic challenges in the world.

India’s real GDP in Q1 of FY2026-27 was recorded at ₹81.36 lakh crore, while it was been recorded at ₹75.46 lakh crore in the same period last year. Real GVA also grew by 8.2% during the quarter. In his recent address, PM Modi has again linked the growth of the Indian economy to the everyday decisions made by citizens – ranging from shopping habits, to celebrations and even purchases.
