This announcement comes at a time when there is a shortage of quality jobs in the country, where almost 90% of the workforce is employed in the informal sector without any social security. Paradoxically, many employers are desperate to identify and develop the right talent, as the skills they require aren’t easily available in the market.
These 51,000 youths are a lucky few of the millions of youth applying for perpetually stable government jobs in the country, where highly educated youth, some even with Ph.d.s, don’t mind applying to sweeper jobs at government offices, where the pay is significantly higher than other positions.
Though the Government is trying to boost employment generation through initiatives like Skill India and Startup India, these initiatives haven’t been able to meet the growing demand for skills in the market.
The government hasn’t been able to leverage these initiatives to boost employment as it should have, as red tape, corruption, and outdated skill development have made these efforts redundant. The government still has to help scores of job seekers who haven’t secured the coveted government jobs they applied to, and have to either keep searching for the ideal job or accept jobs that don’t align with their skills. We’re hoping the upcoming trade deal with the US will give us a significant advantage in exports, skills and jobs, so that we come out this gloomy recession unscathed!
