Jewellery Associations Oppose National Gem and Jewellery Council of India Voting Reform, Say Small Traders Being Marginalised

Ahmedabad: All the associations in the gems and jewellery sector are expressing serious concerns over the proposed new membership and voting system of the NGJCI.

As per the new structure, individual voting rights are being given only to those retailers who have 15 or more outlets, and to those manufacturers who have 75 or more employees and manufacture in their own factories.

This effectively leaves small and medium-sized retailers and manufacturers — the backbone of the Indian gems and jewellery industry — out of the picture.

This system not only marginalises most small traders, but also weakens the role of regional associations. If large organisations are given direct voting rights and small members are left out, the collective voice of the associations will become less influential in the council.

This may lead to the decision-making power being limited to a few big players.

In this situation, instead of becoming an inclusive domestic council, NGJCI feels like it is becoming an organization under the control of a few special classes.

“To maintain the unity, transparency and democratic balance of the industry, it is essential that the membership and voting system are fair and equal for all sections — especially small and micro industries” said Bharatbhai Soni, leader of  Hand Made Jewellery Goldsmiths Association.

National Gem and Jewellery Council of India (NGJCI) is registered under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013 and has been established by the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, for the promotion and service of the domestic Gem and Jewellery industry.

Inaugurated by the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Government of India on 29th January, 2019. This Domestic Council was incorporated as National Gem and Jewellery Council of India on 3rd December, 2021.
