New Delhi: India has jumped on the bandwagon for the new and large group of nations that are collaborating to develop the technology for 6G, the next-generation communication network that will co-exist with the ongoing 5G revolution over the next few years. This was announced on Monday by the United States, which said that India has joined 26 other countries in efforts to direct the development and application of 6G networks worldwide.
How the deal happened
It coincided with a meeting between US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada in India. During a side event at the G20 Innovation Ministerial (G20IM), where ministers of G20 nations on innovation met, the two had a chance to meet on the sidelines. The meeting was held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina from September 1 to 2 and was co-hosted by the US Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
On Twitter, the US Department of Commerce announced that the group’s purpose is to ensure 6G networks are constructed with a shared focus on safety and security, and to accelerate innovation and drive competition.
Why this matters for India
It is a substantial move for India to become a part of this alliance. It will provide greater autonomy to countries in designing, making safe and sharing 6G around the world. 6G won’t just be about faster telephone Internet, it will do much more. It can help in such fields as smart cities, autonomous vehicles or modern factories.
India’s own 6G push
In addition to this global push, India is also developing its own 6G plans at national level with the help of a group known as the Bharat 6G Alliance. The group includes phone companies, equipment provides, startups, colleges, and research centres. By July 2026, it had grown to include 90 members.
India is racing to play a greater role in defining 6G technology and its ownership by participating in both this new global partnership and its own homegrown 6G mission. It’s now time for the real-world outcomes of this international collaboration to manifest themselves specifically in increased research, improved technology and greater involvement in the 6G game rules.
