The Assam government has taken a major step towards integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into school education by signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with six organisations and IIT Madras. The agreements, formalised on Friday, September 4, 2026, aim to improve learning outcomes, strengthen foundational skills and build teachers’ digital capabilities through AI-enabled tools and training.
Partnerships and focus areas
Samagra Shiksha Assam, the state’s flagship school education programme, inked the MoUs with the following partners, each targeting a specific aspect of education:
Google AI: Will provide teachers with AI-powered educational tools, digital skills and professional development support to enhance lesson planning and classroom preparation.
IIT Madras–Bodhan AI: Plans to train around one lakh teachers of Grades 6–12 in AI proficiency by May 2027, using a specialised AI platform developed for educational purposes.
LEHS–Wadhwani AI: Will focus on strengthening foundational literacy by using AI-enabled assessment of students’ reading fluency.
Educate Girls: Will support identification, enrolment and retention of out-of-school adolescents, with a special emphasis on girls.
EkStep–AXL: Will promote personalised, AI-assisted learning in foundational literacy and numeracy.
Canva Education: Will focus on digital literacy, creativity, design thinking and innovation among teachers and students.
Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said the participating companies would bear the major expenses, while the state government would provide the necessary professional and logistical support.
Pilot rollout in selected schools
Under the initiative, AI-based platforms will first be introduced in selected schools to assist teachers with lesson planning, improve teaching methods and support student learning. A pilot project will initially cover about 70 schools, where teachers will be trained to design lesson plans using the new AI tools. An AI platform developed by IIT Madras is expected to be piloted in around 50 schools, while another AI-based platform will help students learn languages and mathematics.
Bro push to tech-enabled learning
The MoU-signing comes as Assam expands its technology-driven education efforts. On the same day, Pegu announced that a recorded teaching system will be introduced for students from Classes 9 to 12 to strengthen the learning process, backed by online teacher training to support digital learning.
The move also aligns with wider national and state-level pushes to bring AI into classrooms. Google has been expanding its educator training programme across India, including collaborations with Assam, while Adobe recently partnered with seven states, including Assam, to provide free access to Adobe Express for Education in government schools.
