DoT implements the NFAP 2025, paving the way for next-gen spectrum allocation

New Delhi: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has released the  National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP) 2025, a policy document recognising and enabling advanced spectrum requirements for next-generation telecom, satellite and digital connectivity services in India.

The policy document lays out a comprehensive roadmap for the use and allocation of next generation radio frequencies, identifying spectrum bands for commercial telecommunications, defence, broadcasting, satellite communications, navigation and emerging technologies. This framework, to be in immediate effect, aligns India’s spectrum strategy with the global best practices.

According to the DoT, the NFAP 2025 will support the rollout and expansion of 5G, 5G advanced and future 6G networks, identifying spectrum between 6425-7125 MHz for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT).

Besides this, the document also identifies and revises the definitions of various satellite-based services in the Ka, Q and V bands, required for high throughput Geo-Stationary Orbit (GSO) satellites and large non-GEO satellite constellations. Besides this, the policy document also supports emerging technologies such as Vehicle to Everything (V2X) communication, LEO/MEO satellite services and other new-age broadband connectivity solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT) solutions.

“These enhancements will ensure that India’s spectrum management remains responsive, high-capacity, and harmonised with global standards, supporting both current and future digital innovations,” the ministry said in a press release.
