Ahmedabad/Surat: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for parts of South Gujarat and North Maharashtra as Cyclone Shakti, the first post-monsoon cyclone this season, intensifies over the Arabian Sea. The cyclonic storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall, winds and rough sea conditions across the Western coast of South Gujarat and North Maharashtra till October 6.
Gujarat, Maharashtra to be on alert
According to the IMD’s latest forecast, coastal districts of Valsad, Navsari, Surat, Daman in Gujarat as well as Palghar and Raigad in Maharashtra have to be on alert. Wind speeds could increase from 68-88 kmph in the late morning to 89-177 kmph in the next 24 hours.
However, despite the severe weather events, the storm is unlikely to make landfall to the coast, and stay offshore.
“CS ““Shakhti” over northeast Arabian Sea moved northwestwards with a speed of 08 kmph during last 6 hours, and lay centered at 1730 hrs IST of today, the 3rd October, 2025 over the same region near latitude 22.0N and longitude 66.4E, about 280 km west of Dwarka,” the IMD tweeted.
At 1800 UTC of 3 Oct, CS Shakhti lay centered about 340 km west of Dwarka. It is likely to move west-southwestwards and intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm around 0000 UTC of 4 Oct. The sea is likely to remain rough till October 6, the day the cyclone is expected to subside.
