Kaynes Technology’s share decline fixed? Stockbroker Motilal Oswal’s contradictory moves feed rumours

Mumbai: Shares of electronics assembler Kaynes Technology have slipped nearly 6% since Tuesday, November 18, even though the company has delivered an exceptional, triple-digit growth in revenues and profits for the July-September quarter.

The company’s shares have been one of the best-performing on the bourses, rising more than 4,500% over 5 years, though its values have declined by 21% on a year-to-date basis.

One of the leading brokerages and fund houses in India, Motilal Oswal, had published a research report about 2 months ago saying the company was a good stock pick, with a target price of ₹8,200 from its current levels of about ₹5,969.

However, the same company has been accused of talking out of both sides of its mouth, with its Mutual Fund arm selling 8.17 lakh shares worth ₹489 crore, by a leading commentator in the stock market space, Mr. TalkStock and others later.

Following the news, another leading stock market reviewer, Jayant Mundhra explained the reasons for this contradiction.

Although the holding company remains the same, Motilal Oswal’s Institutional Equities Research must analyse the stocks for its individual investors. At the same time, its Mutual Fund arm must manage the stocks based on the fund’s investment strategy.

Though this resulted in spicy gossip through viral tweets, the devil is in the details, which most will largely miss.
