Coal India files RHP for subsidiary Bharat Coking Coal, to divest 46.57 crore shares

New Delhi: India’s leading thermal energy player Coal India has filed the Red Herring Prospectus (RHP) for its subsidiary Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), offering to divest 46.57 crore shares in a fully OFS issue. As per the RHP, the company’s main objective is to achieve the benefits of listing on the stock exchange and provide enhanced liquidity for the share market in India.

However, the company hasn’t disclosed the issue size or valuation yet, even as this one remains one of the most anticipated PSU IPOs of the year. BCCL, currently wholly owned by Coal India, is the largest coking coal producer in India, catering to specialised requirements in thermal power plants, cement plants, fertilizer plants and steel plants.

BCCL operates mines and washeries with a capacity of 13.65 million tonnes per annum, with its washeries located near its mines, reducing costs and enhancing operational efficiencies. It processes 58.5% of the total domestic coking coal capacity in India.

The company’s financials have been robust, with its revenues reaching ₹13,998.4 crores as on March 31, 2025. Its Profits After Tax (PAT) reached ₹1,240.19 crores during the same period.

The listing of BCCL represents the next set of reforms by Coal India. On January 2, Coal India had announced its decision to allow buyers from neighbouring countries to participate in its e-auctions, and the news resulted in Coal India’s shares rising by 6%.
