New York, October 28: Artificial Intelligence lab Anthropic has officially filed for an initial public offering (IPO) on the Nasdaq, in what could be one of the largest market debuts in tech history. Though the valuation hasn’t been revealed yet, the AI lab, led by co-founder Dario Amodei, aims to capitalize on surging enterprise demand for its Claude AI assistant, though it hasn’t found a pathway to become profitable yet.
In its public Form S-1 statement, Anthropic has showcased rapid revenue growth, reporting $16.3 billion for the first half of 2026 but a staggering $80.7 billion net loss during the same period. Given the strong demand for its Claude AI bots, Anthropic has locked in over $500 billion in multi-year, non-cancelable cloud and computing obligations with major technology providers for its upcoming AI models.
For the same, the company is sitting on $131.7 billion in cash reserves, more than every other non-bank US company except Berkshire Hathaway and Alphabet. In the six years since its founding, the US-based company has raised a staggering $141 billion in private financing, although it has had to spend consistently to meet its computing obligations.
Running and expanding advanced AI models remains fairly expensive, with Anthropic spending nearly $9 billion on computing infrastructure in the first half of 2026 alone. Besides that, it has spent another $3 billion on researchers, employees and cloud service providers as well, as the company keeps needing money to sustain the immense demand.
Given these challenges, it will remain fairly challenging for Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to meet investor demands for profitability, with everyone wondering how, and when, Anthropic could become profitable.
One user compared Anthropic to Walmart, wondering if the $.15 trillion dollar valuation can offer the revenue Walmart generates in six months.
“Revenue alone cannot settle valuation.
But the gap shows how much future success Anthropic’s proposed price demands.
Investors aren’t just betting AI will grow.
They’re betting Anthropic will capture enough profitable growth to justify a valuation already larger than Walmart’s,” One user named Wealthmoose tweeted.
On Reddit, a viral thread has investors discussing how the IPO could go wrong in this viral thread.
“Even if Anthropic hits $100B in ARR by December, that implies $100B in revenue in 2027 and $200B in 2028 if it doubles again. At a $2T valuation, that’s still 10x forward sales, roughly in line with the Magnificent Seven today.
Anthropic has also said it doesn’t expect to be profitable for several years,” the thread’s discussion explained.
“These companies are growing with the expectation of capturing market share but the reality is competition when it comes to AI models is BRUTAL. Its not openAI they need to worry about but the dozens of smaller AI labs producing models 95% as good at a fraction of the cost, and with it being so so so easy to switch models these companies have ZERO moat. As soon as investment in OpenAI and Anthropic slows these companies are toast,” another explained.
For Dario Amodei, the IPO could be more than just a fundraising effort, it has to show has the AI technology lab is looking to grow and expand, and whether it can actually offer consistent value for investors.
