The cryptocurrency market remains in solidarity with leading exchange Bitget, which fell victim to a sophisticated cyberfraud attack that resulted in a loss of about $351.6 million. The breach, targeted the platforms live wallets, resulted in an immediate freeze on user withdrawals, as Bitget’s technical team moved to contain the damage and prevent further unauthorized transfers.

In a recent communication to the public, Bitget addressed the incident, providing much leading clarity on the platform’s recovery. While the financial impact on holders remains significant, Bitget’s ‘Protection Fund’ remains intact- and will be utilized to cover the losses. The platform will allow phased withdrawals, after the technical team audits the platform’s security to ensure integrity of the updated system.
Given the gravity of the situation and the substantial losses feared, cryptocurrency peers including Richard Teng, CEO of Binance has committed to help Bitget in the recovery efforts. Through a coordinated industry wide response, Binance and other market leaders are working to track the movement of the stolen funds across the blockchain.
This involves blacklisting suspected hacker addresses and sharing real time threat intelligence to prevent criminals from illegally withdrawing the assets through other centralilsed platforms.
As Bitget works to fully restore its services, the exchange has promised to audit the entire incident to determine the exact nature of the vulnerability. The support from major competitors like Binance shows how ‘security diplomacy’ within the crypto space remains crucial as the market aims to remain stable in the light of such threats.
