Mumbai: RRP Electronics Ltd, a semiconductor packaging company, has received a letter of comfort from the Maharashtra government to set up a Rs.12,000 crore semiconductor fabrication facility in Navi Mumbai, according to a report by PTI.
The state government is all set to allocate 100 acres of land to the company to set up the semiconductor fabrication facility, which is all set to produce 125,000 wafers per month. The facility is expected to be ready by mid-2026, after construction commences within 6 months. The report claims the semiconductor fab will be ‘relocated’ from Sherman, Texas, but doesn’t give any further details.
Mr. Rajendra Chodankar, Chairman of RRP Electronics Ltd said,:
“We are thankful to the Government of Maharashtra and Honourable Chief Minister and his team for the continued encouragement and support towards enabling Maharashtra in taking pioneering initiatives for the semiconductor ecosystem. This acquisition is a landmark step in our journey to make India self-reliant in semiconductors.”
The company, backed by cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, has been in the news since it launched in September last year, promising to become India’s leading semiconductor provider. According to its website, it has already launched OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) facilities, and the semiconductor fab is the next step in the process.
With the development, Maharashtra aims to strengthen its position in the global semiconductor value chain, which is currently dominated by Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, especially in manufacturing.
