Mumbai: Indian engineering major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won an additional contract to design, supply, construct, test and commission track works between Mumbai (Bandra-Kurla Complex) and Zaroli village (Gujarat) for the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, the company said in a press release.
The order, awarded by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), involves erecting approximately 156 kilometers of track works, including 135km of elevated viaduct (package C3) and 21km in underground sections (packages C1 and C2). This is the second contract the NHSRCL has awarded L&T, following 116 km between Vadodara City to Sabarmati depot (package T3). With this, the company is now responsible for more than half of the track work for the project.
“Our success in T3 package involved rapid technology absorption, indigenisation of plant & machinery and value engineering. This has been a key factor in our approach to this new order, and we are confident of delivering on time,” Mr S V Desai, Whole-time Director & Sr EVP (Civil Infrastructure), L&T said in the press release.
L&T has the expertise in developing ballastless track technology in India. It is currently executing various ballastless track projects in India and abroad, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Jakarta. For the bullet train project, L&T is using the Japanese Shinkansen J-Slab Track Technology, designed to support speeds up to 320 km/h.
Currently, the Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is progressing rapidly, with the first section between Vapi and Sabarmati to be launched by 2027, according to an announcement in the Lok Sabha by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Following the announcement, L&T’s shares were trading at Rs.3,601 at 10.35 AM on September 15.
