Hindustan Zinc shares rise 4% after government clarifies OFS stance

New Delhi, August 26: Shares of Hindustan Zinc Ltd rose 4% today after the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) issued a clarification ruling out any immediate plans for a government-led Offer for Sale (OFS) in the company. This development comes as the government looks to meet its divestment targets, with the Hindustan Copper OFS going live on August 25.

The government currently holds a 27.92% stake in Hindustan Zinc, with Vedanta Limited holding a 60.71% controlling stake. With silver and zinc prices shooting through the roof, Hindustan Zinc remains one of the strongest performers in the stock market, with the company recording a 145% increase in net profit to Rs.5.469 crore in Q1 FY27.

With Hindustan Zinc’s financials and fundamentals remaining strong, this clarification has provided much-needed relief to the stock, allowing the market to price it purely on its fundamentals. For investors, this helps strengthen Hindustan Zinc’s position as a low-cost processor of zinc and silver, and its increasing importance in global supply chains.

Though the government is a minority shareholder in the company, Hindustan Zinc remains a candidate for future divestments. Vedanta Limited has already offloaded a 1.59% stake through an OFS in January as it aimed to leverage Hindustan Zinc’s strong fundamentals to offset weaknesses in its own balance sheet.
