Mumbai: The Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd (GMDC) is on track toward operationalising the Baitarni-West Coal mine in Odisha, its first mining venture beyond Gujarat. The Gujarat government-run company’s board of directors has approved the rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) plan for those likely to be affected by the mine, a step toward its goal to commence production at the mine.
The Baitarni-West Coal Block is strategically significant, given its mining reserves of 468 million tonnes, boosting India’s broader energy security goals. The mine’s large reserve base is expected to help GMDC develop a long-life asset capable of supplying significant volumes for industrial and power users.
The company has already obtained Stage I Forest Clearance (FC) and Environmental Clearance (EC) for the mine from the Environment Ministry, Government of India. The GMDC is looking to operationalise the mine within its stated timeline, while ensuring responsible mining practices and a long-term growth outlook.
“Advancing Baitarni West coal mine to this stage within 2.5 years highlights GMDC’s focus on efficient project development and sustainable value creation. Our progress reflects a disciplined approach to building high-quality mining assets that support regional development and enhance the Corporation’s long-term growth trajectory.” Mr. Roopwant Singh, MD of GMDC, said in a press release to the bourses.
