New York, August 11: After months of suspense, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani and former Adani Green CEO Vneet Jaain can now heave a sigh of relief as a US court has relieved them of criminal charges dating to November 2024.
Brooklyn district judge Nicholas Garaufis has granted the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Rule 48(a) motion to dismiss the indictment, permanently closing the high profile case that accused the Adani Group chairman of using $265 million of investor funds to bribe Indian officials to get lucrative solar power contracts that could help Adani Green Energy Limited generate more than USD 2 billion in net profits for almost two decades.
In January 2026, a report by Bloomberg alleged that Gautam Adani and the defendants were skipping a US court’s summonses to appear before it, as they were not cooperating with the authorities.
The defendants had hired Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Robert Giuffra for the case, who had also told the US Department of Justice that Gautam Adani was willing to invest $10 billion in the US if the case was dropped.
The judge handling the case had previously asked if the reported investment pledge was a part of the US government’s decision to drop the case, but it was ultimately concluded that it wasn’t a part of the prosecutor’s decision-making.
